As any filmmaker knows, lighting is not
only all-important, it can also be extremely
expensive. Buying pro lighting gear can cost you a large portion of your
equipment budget and while what you get will likely be wonderful, you’ll also
have to deal with expensive bulb replacements and—worst of all—heat that will
turn your set into an oven in a very short time.

Some filmmakers have turned to
fluorescent fixtures, which have virtually no heat. Unfortunately, most of
these kits are way out of the average Joe’s price range. Until now. A video guy by the name of Richard Andrewski (www.coollights.biz ) has spent a lot of
time in his workshop coming up with ingenious ways to take household light
fixtures and turn them into useful, versatile, inexpensive pro-level video and
moviemaking light kits. This alone is a
wonderful thing. But Andrewski has taken
it further by creating a step-by-step DVD on how to build these terrific
lighting kits yourself. For a meager $89—a price well worth the admission—Cool Lights: DIY Fluorescent Video Lighting will show you how to make a variety
of kits, from turning a small, inexpensive halogen work lamp into a fluorescent
video light with barndoors, to a studio monster using large workshop
fixtures. Not only do these lights run
cool, they all look cool. Believe
me, if you follow Andrewski’s instructions, you won’t
be embarrassed to have these useful do-it-yourselfers in your pro studio. Andrewski’s DVD is
professionally produced, extremely informative—not just about building lights,
but also electrical safety—and makes a fine addition to any DIY filmmaker’s
library.
